If you can smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 9990800 111 999
They’ll ask you a series of questions designed to help them to build a picture of the gas emergency. From these details, they’ll highlight the right gas safety advice for you. This may include:
- Opening doors and windows to ventilate any build up of gas
- Turning the gas off at the emergency control valve located next to your gas meter
- Avoiding the use of any naked flames or electrical switches
If you call us instead of the Gas Emergency Service Provider (ESP) then please let us know immediately that you have a gas emergency. If we are unavailable please call the ESP immediately.
If you have water leaking inside your property:

If water is likely to damage your property or furnishings you should locate your mains stopcock and turn the water off until we can get to you.
If water is likely to enter any electrical installation then you should also isolate your electrical supply at the consumer unit or fusebox as it enters the property.
If we believe that damage could be caused to your property we’ll talk you through turning off both water and electrical supplies before we get to you.
